My idea for this final project took flight in August when I overheard my father-in-law express frustration for having a lack of time and knowledge needed to convert dozens of home video from his Sony camcorder tapes over to digital.
To me, his conundrum was a simple fix — and a simple Christmas gift idea: Purchase a Vidbox ($69.99 on Amazon) and convert his large suitcase full of JVC MP120 tapes over to digital. All it took was time, the converter, and a few YouTube videos to show me how. Last week I converted the final tape to rack up a grand total of 118 gigabytes worth of home video.
For the purpose of this project, I created a mini how-I-did-it video by shooting pictures of the process with my Nikon D700, annotating how I did it by using the Explain Everything app on my iPad Pro, and I edited everything on iMovie. The second half of the video shows the introduction to a larger project (a montage of his home videos) I plan to show my father-in-law on Christmas Day.
